Sony DVP-CX995V

Written by wangjing on May 31, 2009 09:06

March 2009. The Sony DVP-CX995V is a jukebox-style DVD changer that holds up to 400 discs at once. In addition, it upconverts video to 1080i and can play SACDs. While some experts recommend the Sony DVP-CX995V as a player that's uniquely suitable if you have a DVD and CD collection that's gotten out of hand, video performance isn't the best, and owner reviews are definitely split. If you're more critical of video quality, the Oppo DV-980H (*est. $170) is a superior performer and lower priced, but it will only handle one disc at a time.

Sony DVP-NC800H/B

Written by wangjing on May 31, 2009 09:05

March 2009. Experts and user reviews generally give the Sony DVP-NC800H/B five-disc DVD changer good grades; this is one of the few carousel players on the market. Video quality is judged to be very good, and the DVD player can upconvert images to 1080p via HDMI (provided it's hooked up to an HDTV). This DVD player includes technology to play of discs with defects such as scratches, which can stymie other players. Although it can't work miracles on severely damaged discs, reports say it is effective. Usability is generally good, but some frustrations are voiced. Those include long loading times, the lack of auto shutoff after playing just one disc, and a shuffle function that's incapable of spanning multiple discs. If five discs are not enough, Sony also offers the DVP-CX995V DVD changer (*est. $275), which holds an impressive 400 discs. However, user and professional reviews are mixed.

OPPO DV-980H

Written by wangjing on May 31, 2009 09:04

March 2009. The Oppo DV-980H plays standard-definition DVDs and can upconvert the resolution to 1080i for HDTVs. This player is feature-packed and comes with a four-in-one memory card reader (for playing photos from a memory card), and it supports SACD and DVD-Audio high-resolution audio playback. Perhaps reviewers' favorite feature is the included HDMI cable -- a valuable extra that few manufacturers provide. Buyers can also convert the Oppo DV-980H into a region-free player, a boon for users who wish to play discs from all over the world. Video quality is excellent, but some lower-priced DVD players, such as the Onkyo DV-SP406 (*est. $115), can output 1080p video and deliver picture quality that's nearly as good.

Onkyo DV-SP406

Written by wangjing on May 31, 2009 09:04

March 2009. The Onkyo DV-SP406 standard-definition DVD player doesn't quite deliver every drop of video perfection, but it comes as close as any other standard DVD player in its price class. Reports say it does a good job of upscaling standard-definition movies to near-HD quality (provided you have an HDTV), adding that the Onkyo DV-SP406 can render even difficult scenes with a minimum of artifacts. Colors are natural, and dark scenes are handled with aplomb, experts note. Disc and format support is good, though not universal. Sound quality is fine for movies but isn't the best for audio CDs. If you want better audio performance, the Oppo Digital DV-980H (*est. $170) gets the best scores; the Oppo DVD player is also a region-free player, so it can play European and Asian DVDs as well as U.S. DVDs.

Sony DVP-SR200P/B

Written by wangjing on May 31, 2009 09:02

March 2009. For those on a limited budget or who do not own an HDTV, it's hard to find a better basic DVD player than Sony's DVP-SR200B. Most reports say that playback is solid. Technology intended to make it possible for the Sony DVP-SR200B/P to play discs in less than perfect condition is effective. While this cheap Sony DVD player can't upscale, it can output video in a progressive format for compatible TVs. Connectivity is relatively limited. Missing connections include an optical digital audio output and an HDMI output, but if you aren't hooking this player up to an HDTV or a home-theater receiver, you wouldn't be using those connections anyway. Most other current and available DVD players in the same price class as the Sony DVP-SR200P/B are widely panned. If you need a DVD player for use with an HDTV, reviewers say the Onkyo DV-SP406 (*est. $115) is a better bet. This is an upconverting DVD player that experts and users say delivers top-shelf video performance.
